APICS Vancouver brings you:
JOB INSTRUCTION - Introducing Standard Work in Lean
Masaaki Imai, a leading manufacturing thinker in Japan for many years, said that “Without standards, there can be no improvement.”
In this fast-paced program participants will be introduced to a powerful way to introduce new skills and standard work to employees. Proven in thousands of companies over more than 70 years, this approach to teaching skills has been shown to take 30-50% less time to get to production-ready performance. It also takes 25-40% less time to prepare and reduces learning mistakes to almost nothing.
The approach has a host of other advantages, too, but the cost saving as you bring people into new positions is all your boss will care about.
Participants must bring material with them to do a simple job from their operation, including hand tools and components.
You’ll leave with a solid draft of a job instruction document and having practiced the training method.

YOUR FACILITATOR:

Hugh Alley is an experienced operations manager with broad experience in a range of industries. He has achieved results such as 10% labour productivity gains year over year for 3 years in a row, a 95% reduction in the accident rate in just two years, and reducing lead times by 25% to 75%. He has made these improvements in organizations handling complex decision processes, physical goods and services. He has used a wide range of practical tools – LEAN, theory of constraints, reduction in variation, and improvement kata, and others.

Hugh has improved the capacity of front line leadership to significantly improve operational performance. One plant went from no employee suggestions to having front line staff implement 1-2 ideas a week in just 3 years.

A registered industrial engineer, Hugh has worked in many industries including mining, steel, secondary wood, food, electronics and appliance assembly, heavy and light metal fabrication, repair and maintenance, industrial laundries, furniture, and banking. He has also worked extensively in the public sector, including WCB, education, health care and various regulatory and permitting agencies.

Hugh is also an accomplished project manager. He managed four multi-million dollar projects that delivered as promised. He led three project rescues, in each case, getting the project back on track and preventing any further losses in time or money.

Most recently he worked for a large consulting engineering firm. Prior to that he ran his own consulting and staff development firm, First Line Training. He has run three manufacturing plants and a large public-sector department. He has worked as a staff resource for executives, and he has done consulting, both on his own and in larger firms.

Hugh can be reached at [email protected]
